Ubisoft’s new AI wing melds gaming and scientific research

As an example, Ubisoft points to its work on creating a small-scale version of the San Francisco Bay Area for Watch Dogs 2. The company developed AI-guided cars and pedestrians to navigate a realistic urban environment, and that’s potentially ideal for self-driving car research — scientists could use Watch Dogs‘ technology to test autonomous driving in tricky situations (such as crowds) without having to put real cars on the road. At the same time, AI designed for real cars could lead to better in-game AI.

Other work includes AI that walks and moves more realistically (helpful for robots and prosthetics) and detecting toxic behavior in online communities.

La Forge is still young, so it’s hard to know whether or not it’ll keep both sides interested. If Ubisoft keeps its juicier AI breakthroughs to itself, academics might lose interest. Likewise, Ubi may jump ship if research teams don’t produce enough relevant breakthroughs. If it pans out, however, this could be key to ending some of the isolation in AI development.

Digitalization vs Digitization

According to Gartner, the modern day businesses uses technology to address people need, behavior  in the form of Digitalization to add revenue and value-producing opportunities. Digitization is the process of changing analog (document, object, sound, image etc.,) to digital files (media, video, music, image file format, etc.,).

Today, CMS, WCMS, ECM, DAM or DXP play a crucial role in providing a successful Digitalization and Digitization experience to customers. Before proceeding further, let us know the difference between the terms (CMS, WCMS, ECM, DAM or DXP).

Terms Description References
CMS/WCMS CMS (Content Management System) and WCMS (Web Content Management System) are technically the same and provides software for collaborative authoring of public web content
ECM ECM is Enterprise Content Management that provides software to manage scanning, storage, organization and retrieval of physical documents  https://www.cmscritic.com/dir/enterprise
DAM Digital Asset Management that provides software to manage a broad variety of digital assets. DAM systems are often used by media companies to catalog, annotate, store, retrieve and distribute audio, video, animations and other digital media content.  https://www.cmscritic.com/dir/dam/all/all/all/
DXP Digital Experience Software create content for every digital channel available today, as well as improve business operations through digitization and integration

Digital Experience Platform (DXP) is an emerging category in enterprise software aimed at meeting the needs of companies that want to undergo digital transformation. DXP is a product suite that provide companies to digitize their business operations, collect actionable customer insight, deliver connected customer experience. DXPs final goal is providing better customer experience.

Small Background of Digitalization Experience Platform

Most businesses positioned by enterprises as DXPs have their base in one of the three categories:  Content Management Systems, Portal Servers, and Commerce Servers. These categories give set of offerings for different adaptations.

CMS-heritage DXPs focus on the needs of marketing departments and creative agencies. Customer data they collect tend to be anonymous and generalized into audience segments. Most business problems solved by these products are related to the acquisition of customers: generating awareness and interest, targeting offers, and accelerating purchases. They do particularly well in B2C (retail, fashion) scenarios where the sales cycle is short and transactional, and audiences are large.

The leading CMS-heritage DXPs have strong offerings for web-based analytics, user segmentation, advertising campaigns, and email campaigns. These are often provided by products in the platform suite, but because they are separate (and likely acquired from other vendors) they may be less or more well integrated with each other.

Some CMS-heritage DXPs have tried to add portal-like features like logged-in experiences, and some include commerce capabilities; the latter are often the result of an acquisition or partnership.

Digitalization Experience Platform Approach

DXPs address problems that has led organizations to start radically reengineering their business practices to be extremely customer-oriented:

  • The dominant ways that customer interact have become major digital channels like smartphones, social networking, websites etc.,
  • Customer who expect to have great experience like Google, Apple, and Facebook
  • Smartphones provide companies more ways to keep in touch with customers by way of location and proximity
  • Data analytics and insight provide audience segment with a highly personalized experience
  • In a nutshell, digital technologies has disrupted all segments of traditional business starting from buying groceries to dining

CMS and Web Experience Content Management System

CMS allows to build, launch, manage, and host websites. Though, Web Experience Platform also does the same functionality of a CMS, the Web Experience Platform delivers a unique user experience to every website visitor based on a rich set of data to influence the user experience personally.

The CMS focus is on singular content and messaging, while a Web Experience Platform deliver unique web experiences with the content, medium, and messaging completely personalized to the user. Taking internet into consideration, you have tons of content that is ready to serve a wide range of customers of different choice.

Consider a scenario with an organization employed at different levels (marketeers, sales, business analysts, administrators, developers, testers and end users). To have a web experience platform, you will create conditional structures to serve appropriate content based on different levels of the user which can come from different sources of data, namely behaviour, cookies, browser history, viewing device, etc.

With the ability to personalize content and deliver different user experiences to every customer using different web and mobile technology, the Enterprises are able to utilize the available opportunities, growing competition, and hence increase their growth index. The future of website management is heading to serve personalized content tailored to the user, giving each user a different experience with each website that they visit.

Today, the growing user demand on innovation has extended the barriers of web programming languages, designs, and frameworks, forcing the developers to adapt to the new standard in web development.

Challenges in Digitalization Experience Platform

Every digital journey provides a unique customer experience. In the present Digital Platform, there is always a demand to deliver flawless content and user interaction right from the entry screen to the exit. The highly busted digital market has led to identify the following major building blocks for giant vendors like IBM, Adobe Experience Manager, Sitecore, Oracle, Salesforce, SAP to smaller vendors like SDL, Demandware, EPiServer to handle the entire software stack.

  • Content: All Digital channels (mobile, web applications, shopping websites, social media etc.,) are developed with words, media files, images, audio- majorly personalized to each customer needs and requirement. The biggest challenge is providing great customer experience, without knowing what each customer or user actually need. Failing to provide a good customer experience in the beginning can spoil your brand reputation and end up in loosing your customer.
  • Customers: Knowing your customer (KYC) enables enterprises to do the right thing  with ability to build mutual confidence.
  • Analytics: DXP engineered with analytics lay the foundation for Artificial Intelligence (AI). DXP is enhanced by knowing who your customers are, how many access your website. Analytics improves how your site is performing, does an SEO health check, analyze the gathered statistics.
  • Marketing: DXP marketing challenge is about creative design, managing product information, digital asset management, multichannel publishing.

Digitization-vs-Digitalization

Digital Experience Platform attract Customers

Top brands like Google, Amazon, Walmart, L’oreal, Marks & Spencer’s, Ikea, Pepsi, Ebay and Myer make use of latest digital technologies to the core to have transformative impact and build brand loyalty.

  • Recently, Giant store Walmart measured itself in terms of where they are, by conducting  a Proof of Concept (PoC). Couple of demos were hosted to show how a person doing fishing for first time can experiment expensive fishing products in the context of where they can be used through Virtual Reality (VR). This brings in a buzzword contextual commerce in retail VR.
  • Top selling shoe brand, Adidas launched its exclusive personalized E-commerce shopping App by rolling out consumers buy options through Apple Pay and Android Pay with one click of a button. The app will be available in more countries in the first half of 2018.
  • Major Automakers like Tesla, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Waymo, Renault are developing autonomous and electric vehicles in Britain and Arizona, United States. These driverless cars are tested under condition based on Light detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensors that detect edges of the road, light conditions, signals, bouncy or normal road  conditions.
  • Google Brain in collaboration with IBM is testing the possibilities of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) to transcribe the patient-doctor conversation, medical notes by investigating the use of voice recognition technology already available in Assistant, Home and Translate.
  • E-Bay in collaboration and Myer launched the E-Bay VR Department Store App that enables customers to use their smartphones as a shoptical VR glasses to start their personalized shopping experience. E-Bay’s gaze technology makes the mobile device to know the user interest at any given point in time using eye tracking sensors.

iCIMS Experiences Significant Enterprise Customer Growth

iCIMS Inc., a leading provider of cloud-based talent acquisition solutions, announced continued customer growth among enterprise-sized businesses including Samsonite, Tractor Supply, Wellstar, AmTrust, Air Medical Group Holdings and SunRun among others.

“Recruiting is growing increasingly complex in this market and employers are seeing the benefits of having a best-of-breed platform for recruiting that seamlessly integrates with their HCM suite,” said Susan Vitale, chief marketing officer at iCIMS.

Enterprise organizations with multi-division, high-volume, international and other complex hiring needs are turning to best-of-breed talent acquisition platforms for scalable solutions that can keep pace with the dynamic recruitment technology landscape and support the mission critical work of hiring the right people.

iCIMS’ suite of products is complemented by a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) framework, UNIFi, which unifies all aspects of talent acquisition across more than 200 related solutions to customers via the industry’s largest talent acquisition Marketplace. Earlier this year iCIMS announced advancements within its PaaS framework including a new developer site and forum, popularity functionality in the iCIMS Marketplace and an enhanced integration solution for high-volume hiring.

“It is essential to have a unified talent acquisition experience and view because talent acquisition is the first entry of anyone into any organization,” said DK Bartley, vice president of talent at Dentsu Aegis Media Americas, an iCIMS customer with more than 35,000 employees. “Having the right technology partner allows you to set the tone as a company, an operating model and a business: how do you work, what is important to you, and what that collaborative process is about.”

Many industry analysts are also turning their attention to best-of-breed tools for recruiting, further solidifying that talent acquisition is complex enough to have its own platform-of-record that can meet the dynamic needs of this industry. In a recent report from Bersin by Deloitte, “HR Technology Disruptions for 2018,” Josh Bersin mentions that best-of-breed vendors in recruitment are filling in gaps that ERP providers cannot address. “The ERP and integrated platform providers have their hands full developing payroll, learning, and other core systems, so they tend to be hard-pressed to build the level of functionality these … companies do at speed,” said Bersin.

iCIMS supports users in more than 70 countries and processes more than 32 million job applications per year for today’s leading global brands including some of the world’s largest manufacturing, financial services, healthcare and retail companies.

“We believe talent acquisition is critical to business success,” said iCIMS customer, Matt Oddo, director of HR administration and technology at Tractor Supply, a retail company with more than 1,600 locations and 25,000 employees. “We chose iCIMS because the company has remained focused on providing an enterprise-ready, scalable best-of-breed recruitment platform and offered a strong integration with our HCM software. Centralizing these technologies into one unified workflow within the iCIMS platform enables our team to gain greater efficiency and more actionable insights.”

Ferrari races ahead with ANSYS simulation technology

With ANSYS engineering simulation technology behind the steering wheel, Ferrari raced past the competition to win the Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ World Championship titles and the Team’s Trophy in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Securing its fifth WEC constructor’s title and twenty-fourth overall, Ferrari uses ANSYS computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solutions to maintain best-in-class endurance-oriented aerodynamic performance. With ANSYS, the engineers can maximise downforce, minimise tire degradation and optimise airflow around the car to keep critical components within the ideal temperature operating ranges — essential elements for outpacing competitors.

“With race times lasting anywhere from six to 24 hours, speed and reliability are critical factors for cars competing in the WEC to achieve success and see the checkered flag,” said Ferdinando Cannizzo, Ferrari Competizioni GT technical coordinator. “ANSYS enables our team to quickly test multiple configurations between each lap and provides accurate insight — empowering our team to improve our speed and reliability in real time.”

“Our team has worked with Ferrari for more than 20 years and we continue to be inspired by their drive for innovation and excellence,” said Sandeep Sovani, director, industry marketing at ANSYS. “ANSYS simulation technology combined with Ferrari’s world-class products and drivers create an unstoppable force on the track, we look forward to many more trips around the track together.”

The future is bright for UK manufacuring, says adi Group

A recent report by Santander and EEF has highlighted the growth potential of the UK manufacturing sector. A welcome change from the doom and gloom of recent years, the report found that the sector generates 10 per cent of the UK’s total economic output and produces a staggering 44 per cent of the goods and services we export to international markets.1

adi Group welcomes the findings and believes that 2018 will be another productive year for UK manufacturing if manufacturers embrace new technologies. Ian Millington, manging director of adi Automation, part of the adi Group of companies, comments:

1. Industry 4.0

“This is undoubtedly the flavour of the month. Not only would companies reap significant rewards from investing the time and money into the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it’s vital to maintaining the continuous growth of UK manufacturing.

“Industry 4.0 creates new, digitally-enabled opportunities to enhance operational efficiency via the automation of industrial processes, connectivity between industrial equipment, and ongoing data capture and visualisation. As part of this digital shift, manufacturers will be required to broaden their horizons and upgrade what they already have, in both staff skill and in manufacturing processes, in order to make the most of our increasingly connected world.”

2. Cybersecurity

“If businesses want to ensure that they benefit from the increasingly digital manufacturing landscape, they must be prepared to overcome some significant challenges. Though cybersecurity is important, with more than 200,000 malware programs launching per day, companies should not be afraid of it as there are a multitude of avenues to help mitigate the risk. This includes separation of IT (information technology) and OT (operational technology) systems, as well as setting up robust security protocols and access permissions to certain persons, who can only access data that is necessary for their job role.

“That said, as highlighted by the EEF/Santander report, highly skilled employees will be crucial if UK manufacturers are to work towards the country’s ambitions for growth.”

3. Skills

“The manufacturing industry is currently facing a skills crisis. The 2017 Engineering UK: The State of Engineering report indicates an annual shortfall of at least 20,000 skilled employees, and forecasts that 186,000 people with engineering skills will be required each year from now until 2024 in order to meet the country’s manufacturing needs.2

“As the industry becomes increasingly reliant on digital methods such as factory automation, the reality is that the UK is not currently producing enough young people equipped with the right skills fast enough.

“In light of this and in an effort to promote the skills the industry needs, adi has made a concerted effort to grow its apprenticeship programmes, and we encourage other businesses to do the same.

“Going into 2018, manufacturers must fully embrace change to achieve the operational excellence required to remain relevant with customers, business partners and the industry as a whole. With research also highlighting the positive performance of the sector this past year, manufacturers are perfectly justified in feeling ambitious.”

Pramata Wins Silver in Best in Biz Awards 2017

Pramata, the commercial relationship operations company, today announced it has been named a winner for enterprise product of the year from Best in Biz Awards, the only independent business awards program judged each year by prominent editors and reporters from top-tier publications in North America. Pramata received a silver for its innovative commercial relationship operations platform and managed services, which help large B2B enterprises eliminate revenue leakage.

Companies are losing millions of dollars in the form of missed price increases, unseen cross-sell, poorly executed renewal negotiations, over-discounting and misbilling because their teams don’t have easy access to important details about their commercial relationships. Traditional approaches to managing enterprise data are prone to revenue leakage, as they are manual and ad hoc, with data trapped in spreadsheets, emails or siloed systems. Pramata is the only company that combines a cloud software platform embedded with the 99% accurate data from commercial documentation–curated by human-in-the-loop Artificial Intelligence (AI)–to target and eliminate revenue leakage. Pramata is trusted by the largest companies in the world, including CenturyLink, Comcast Business, FICO, HPE, Micro Focus, Microsoft, NCR, and Novelis. Many have realized an increase in customer retention of over four percent and a three percent to five percent reduction in revenue leakage.

Each year, Best in Biz Awards’ entrants span the spectrum, from some of the most innovative local start-ups to the most recognizable global brands. The seventh annual program was particularly hotly contested, with more than 650 entries from an impressive array of public and private companies of all sizes and from a variety of industries and geographic regions in the U.S. and Canada. Best in Biz Awards 2017 honors were presented in 65 categories, including Company of the Year, Fastest-Growing Company, Most Innovative Company, Best Place to Work, Support Department, Executive of the Year, Most Innovative Product, Best New Product, App, Event and Website of the Year.

“We are honored to win a Best in Biz Award for our commercial relationship operations platform, which we designed to solve the real problem companies face every day of getting accurate data from contracts, billing, CRM and ERP in the right hands at the right time,” said Praful Saklani, CEO, Pramata. “This award validates our technology and managed services, and is a testament to the gains our customers have realized by using Pramata.”

Since 2011, winners of Best in Biz Awards have been determined based on scoring from independent judging panels composed of prominent editors and reporters from some of the most respected newspapers, TV outlets, and business, consumer, technology and trade publications in North America. Best in Biz Awards’ uniqueness stems, in part, from this distinct composition of its judging panels, allowing it to best leverage the judges’ unparalleled expertise, experience and objectivity to determine award winners. The 2017 judging panel included: Accounting Today, AdWeek, Associated Press, Atlanta Tribune, Business News Daily, Consumer Affairs, Entrepreneur, eWeek, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, Healthcare Innovation News, Inc., Investment Advisor Magazine, Laptop, MediaPost, Pittsburgh Business Times, Security Products Magazine, Wired, WLRN and Yahoo Tech.

What’s Next After the Repeal of Net Neutrality

The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to discard so-called net neutrality rules that prevented broadband providers from slowing sites or demanding payments from them for fast delivery. The decision opens the door for very different consumer experiences on the internet. The rules will go into effect in the coming weeks.

Here is a guide to what will happen next:

Is my Netflix going to start sputtering? Will my internet service bill go up?

Consumers will probably not encounter immediate changes to their internet service. The biggest broadband companies, like Comcast and AT&T, have promised that consumers will not see a change in how they experience the web. And with such a big spotlight on them, the companies will probably be careful about changing service plans, partly to avoid angering customers and attracting lawmakers’ attention.

Broadband companies are “likely to proceed cautiously pending final resolution of these legal challenges,” said John Beahn, a regulatory lawyer at Skadden, Arps, who does not have clients with interests in net neutrality. “They recognize the ultimate fate of the regulations is still far from certain at this point.”

But significant changes could come over time. For instance, AT&T could decide to charge a company like Etsy or Netflix more to deliver traffic from the website’s servers around the internet. Internet service providers, many of which are also media companies, could create faster lanes of delivery for their own sites, which would make it harder for the content of their rivals to show up in front of consumers. In the past, some providers have even blocked sites, as when AT&T prevented Apple’s FaceTime service from working for some customers of its wireless networks in 2012.

One Republican commissioner, Mike O’Rielly, said he supported some forms of paid prioritization, which could open the door for an internet model more like cable television, with different price tiers for certain websites.

People are mortgaging their houses to buy Bitcoin

Still, it seems some people aren’t paying heed. A bunch of wannabe investors are even going so far as to take mortgages out to buy bitcoin, while others are running up credit cards and turning to equity lines. That’s according to securities regulator, Joseph Borg.

As the president of the North American Securities Administrators Association, he knows a thing or two about this stuff. Bitcoin is in the “mania” phase, Borg told CNBC in reference to the frenzy around the currency. And, while the launch of the first US Bitcoin futures exchange by Cboe is dragging it into the financial mainstream, that doesn’t mean it will go the distance, according to Borg. He added that the currency is still not regulated, with regulators struggling to keep pace with the tech’s innovation.

“We’re looking at it from a money transmission point of view but that doesn’t cover the entire bitcoin space,” explained Borg. He concluded that the Blockchain technology that underpins Bitcoin is here to stay, along with cryptocurrency (in one form or another). Whether Bitcoin will survive all the speculative interest remains as unclear as ever.

Avril Supermarché Santé goes live with SAP for Retail

Avril Supermarché Santé, the leading independent Québec grocery chain specializing in organic and natural products, has gone live across all their stores with SAP for Retail.

Last year, Avril selected Beyond Technologies to help them leverage SAP’s retail solution to propel the organization into a state of digital transformation. Their rise in demand and ever-expanding customer base made it necessary for them to choose a solution and a partner that mastered retail operations for businesses of all sizes with growth aspirations.

A little over a year later and with a new store opening and a warehouse relocation throughout the process, Avril now runs every retail operation with a fully integrated SAP ERP for Retail, powered by HANA, SAP’s in-memory database. The final step to their retail ERP digital transformation journey will be to integrate SAP POS. Avril is very excited and they are looking forward to making this happen, in collaboration with Beyond Technologies!

Implementing an ERP is challenging for any organization. Given our limited resources, from both IT and business standpoints, we needed a partner that understood our reality and showed flexibility. Beyond Technologies’ approach makes SAP affordable for small but growing organizations. We are now equipped with the same Retail ERP used by our large competitors”, says Rolland Tanguay, President, Avril Supermarché Santé.

We are very pleased to have helped Avril improve their operations, once again leveraging our Retail expertise. Using SAP for Retail solutions will help make their store operations as well as their supplier and partner relationships smarter, giving them a clear edge over the competition. Being part of such a digital transformation is what drives Beyond Technologies”, says Alain Dubois, Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer at Beyond Technologies.

Vena Introduces Industry-First Revenue Performance Management Software for Smarter Business, Revenue Growth

Vena Solutions, the fastest growing provider of cloud-based corporate performance management (CPM) software, today announced Revenue Performance Management (RPM), a new, industry-first solution designed for SaaS and subscription-based businesses to better allocate resources and align departments to maximize revenues, profitability and business growth.

“Vena’s Revenue Performance Management provides companies with a unified understanding of what really drives their revenues, enabling them to act on the metrics that matter most for business growth,” said Craig Schiff, president and CEO, BPM Partners. “The focus on all aspects of revenue growth and not just expense tracking makes RPM a potential game changer for organizations that haven’t had access to this type of information before.”

Vena’s RPM solution provides executives with an integrated, deep look into KPIs and other data from across revenue-driving departments including sales, marketing, customer care and finance. Personalized RPM dashboards provide both top-level and drill-down views of insights from previously disparate sources – including customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise resource planning (ERP), web analytics, marketing automation, customer support and general ledger (GL) systems.

“Bringing together data from across the business, Vena’s RPM software gives companies a clear understanding of the factors that drive (or get in the way of) optimal revenue growth,” said Don Mal, CEO of Vena. “With this industry-first technology, we’re not only helping companies redefine their core financial processes, but giving them new insights into the best way to grow their business. Where most financial software focuses on companies’ expenses, RPM tells the untold story behind their top line.”

By using data-driven business models, executives can use RPM to understand the potential impacts of almost any decision or investment on other departments and overall corporate objectives. Department-specific benefits and capabilities of RPM include:

Finance: Make every funding decision with confidence.

Draw on real-time data from sales, marketing, customer care and finance for top-level and deep-dive insights into the most important indicators of business growth.

Marketing: Maximize the impact of every dollar.

Integrate data from marketing automation, web analytics, CRM and other systems to measure the revenue impact of every campaign, channel and tactic.

Sales: Spend less on the chase and more on the close.

Combine CRM, marketing funnel, sales rep productivity and financial data for real-time visibility into existing pipelines and accurately forecast current and future sales.

Customer Care: Nurture the right customers for life.

Integrate disparate customer data, such as Net Promoter Scores (NPS), product usage, customer acquisition and support costs, to see the health, opportunities and risks facing every customer.

Pricing and Availability

Vena RPM is currently available in beta for select customers, with general availability planned for Q1 2018. The software is offered on an annual subscription basis, either as a standalone application or as part of one of Vena’s Enterprise Suite packages. To join the beta program and for more information, contact Vena at https://venasolutions.com/try-vena/

Code and Craft Augmented Reality Powers Next-Gen Fashion Experiences

Code and Craft, a technology company that specializes in augmented and virtual reality experiences, today announced the launch of its AR Product Catalog, the first fashion-focused mobile app that leverages photorealistic 3D scanning services. Now, for the first time, users can virtually showcase an entire collection from an iPad or iPhone utilizing Apple’s ARKit technology. Code and Craft detailed photorealistic models create the closest representation to a physical product and enable customers to interact with samples just as they would in real life. The new release changes the normal course of business for brands by replacing the need for costly in-person travel, numerous product samples, or poor-quality line sheets, with a life-like 3D online showroom experience.

Maggy London International, a premier women’s apparel brand, is currently piloting the Code and Craft technology. The Maggy London Virtual Product Catalog http://bit.ly/arproductcatalog is designed to enable sales associates to digitally render products to customers. The solution integrates into Maggy London’s ERP system, providing detail about item popularity and performance across key retail markets.

“Fashion is a high-touch industry and it is critical that the technology we use creates compelling experiences for our customers,” said, Jonathan Lefkowitz, COO of Maggy London International. “The Code and Craft AR solution allows us to stay ahead of the curve with a solution that outperforms any existing technology in terms of accuracy and detail. By enabling our sales associates to quickly showcase product lines and replicate the showroom experience, we will ultimately reduce the cost of sales and shorten the sales cycle.”

“We’re looking to revolutionize the way the fashion industry addresses the ‘touch and feel’ mentality. As larger companies invest in future solutions that allow people to ‘try on products,’ we are focused on delivering value today. Combining mobile AR and our photorealistic scanning services, we empower our customers with the ability to digitally render life-like products on mobile devices from wherever they are,” said Gwan Yip, chief product officer and co-founder of Code and Craft.

Riding the AI wave

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the term “artificial intelligence?” I am reminded of the famous 1999 movie Matrix in which the dialogue “Never send a human to do a machine’s job” became popular. The movie, Wachowski brothers’ cyberpunk action classic, was set in a grim future where intelligent machines had enslaved mankind, keeping them subdued with a simulated reality called the Matrix. Dark-suited, sunglasses-sporting ‘agents’ — powerful, sentient AI programmes — patrolled the Matrix, led by Hugo Weaving’s snarling villainous Agent Smith. They suppressed human rebellion by dodging bullets and punching through concrete. But in reality, artificial intelligence already plays an active role in our everyday lives.

By now, most of us are aware of phone assistants such as Siri or Google Now, that is artificial intelligence. You may have also identified AI when playing chess against a virtual opponent, or when playing more sophisticated motion-tracking games with the Kinect. But did you know that artificial intelligence is also present in Google translate and spam blockers?

Artificial Intelligence or AI is the science of using computers to do things that traditionally require the human mind. It is a technology that will accelerate the digital transformation of industry, and will prove essential to the success of our digital economy in an increasingly connected world.

For AI to deliver on its promise, however, it will require predictability and trust. These two are interrelated. Predictable treatment of the complex issues AI will throw up, such as accountability and permitted data uses, will encourage investment and use. Similarly, progress requires consumers to trust the technology, the fairness of how they are affected by it, and how their data is used; predictable and transparent treatment facilitates this trust.

Opportunities

Better understanding of AI is necessary for students to make a career of it. Studying it opens up a world of opportunities.

At a basic level, you will better understand the systems and tools that you interact with on a daily basis. And if you stick with the subject and study more, you can help create cutting-edge AI applications, like the Google Self Driving Car, or IBM’s Watson — the possibilities are endless.

Studying AI now can prepare you for a job as a software engineer researching neural networks, human-machine interfaces, and quantum artificial intelligence. Or, you could work as a software engineer in the industry working for companies like Amazon for shopping list recommendation engines and Facebook for analysing and processing big data.
