I’ll answer this with the lens of what’s current on my mind as I look to keep Dropbox and Dropbox user data secure.

• The trend towards the usage of SaaS software to solve business needs is only accelerating. This means it’s important to understand what data is most important to you (for us, it’s user data), where you’re putting it, which SaaS vendors you trust to what level, and that you can identify good vs. bad SaaS security postures.
• We need more talented cyber security professionals. With all the focus on cyber security and cyber security incidents in the news, everyone is hiring for cyber security. It’s tough to hire, especially if you’re a less established company.
• Failure can have consequences. I don’t want to mention names, but there have definitely been some significant cyber security failures over the last year or two that have had measurable and lasting consequences, ranging from $$ value loss to congressional hearings.
• Watch out for the left field issues. It’s been a year of left field issues, ranging from CPU patching becoming a regular thing, to alleged hardware supply chain attacks, to the abuse of platforms instead of abuse of security vulnerabilities. The trend, if there is one, is that CSOs need to expect the unexpected and actively brainstorm on what unexpected could look like for their company and sector.
